A Cole County judge recently ruled key elements of a Republican-led “voter integrity” law unconstitutional and vague. The law, which was passed in reaction to former President Donald Trump’s false claims about the 2020 election, included provisions banning paid solicitation of voter registration applications and imposing restrictions on volunteers who attempt to sign up voters. The judge sided with voting rights groups who argued that the law limited their ability to engage in voter outreach and activities. However, the ruling did uphold the requirement for voters to present a photo ID at the polls. The League of Women Voters of Missouri and the Missouri State Conference of the NAACP, who had challenged the law, praised the decision, stating that it violated their constitutional rights and could have led to felony charges for their volunteers. Following the ruling, the groups announced their intent to appeal the decision to the Missouri Supreme Court. They expressed concerns about the barriers the law created for marginalized groups in exercising their right to vote and vowed to continue fighting against discriminatory voting laws.
