Community in Columbia rallies to support resident in need | Local news in Mid-Missouri

Navy veteran Douglas Fristoe, a beloved neighbor in the West Ash neighborhood of Columbia, is facing eviction due to a rent increase he cannot afford. Fristoe, who is on a fixed income and does not have a car, has lived in the neighborhood for over 5 years and is described as a “staple” by his neighbors. Upon learning of his situation, neighbors rallied together to support Fristoe. They set up a GoFundMe campaign to help him open a credit card, which quickly exceeded its $250 goal and has now raised over $2,000 to help him buy a new home.

To show his gratitude, Fristoe hosted a neighborhood cookout before Thanksgiving, using his SNAP benefits to buy food and hosting a gathering with his neighbors. Despite the uncertainty of his future, Fristoe is grateful for the outpouring of support from his community and has expressed his intention to always return to the neighborhood, where he is surrounded by friends who care for him.

The GoFundMe campaign is still open as neighbors continue to work towards helping Fristoe stay in the neighborhood he calls home. The heartwarming story of Fristoe and his community coming together in a time of need serves as a reminder of the importance of compassion and support within a close-knit neighborhood.
