Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) recently reported that over 100,000 deer were harvested during the November firearms season. The season ran from November 16 to 26, with hunters bringing in a total of 159,120 deer. Among those harvested, 82,613 were antlered bucks, 13,203 were button bucks, and 63,304 were does. This year’s harvest was slightly lower than last year’s total of 193,885, with the 2024 season estimated to be 15% below the five-year average.
Several factors contributed to this year’s harvest average, including hunting weather conditions, bumper acorn crops, and heavily forested areas. Franklin County had the most deer harvested, followed by Texas County and Howell County. Firearms deer hunting will continue with various portions open at different times in select counties, while archery deer hunting will also reopen from November 27 to January 15, 2025.
The MDC highlighted that the abundance of acorns in the woods this year may have decreased deer movement to open areas, impacting the harvest. More information regarding deer and turkey hunting seasons can be found on the MDC website. Hunters are encouraged to follow regulations and guidelines to ensure a safe and successful hunting season.
