After spending four decades in a Missouri prison for a murder she did not commit, Sandra Hemme is finally on the brink of freedom. Hemme, who was found innocent of the 1980 murder of Patricia Jeschke after a judge ruled that she was a victim of a manifest injustice, is eagerly anticipating Thanksgiving dinner with her family. The deadline for the prosecutor to retry her has passed, and Hemme’s legal team has filed a motion for her unconditional release, marking the final step in her legal battle. Despite facing challenges, including prosecutors withholding evidence and being heavily sedated during interrogations, Hemme’s conviction was overturned in June. The Missouri Court of Appeals upheld the ruling in October, and Hemme is now waiting for a response from the Missouri Attorney General. After the long ordeal, Hemme and her family can finally look forward to being together for the first time in 44 years. This Thanksgiving, Hemme has much to be thankful for as she prepares to celebrate her newfound freedom with her loved ones.
