Missouri’s Governor-elect Kehoe promises more abortion legislation from Republicans, according to KCUR

Missouri Gov.-elect Mike Kehoe stated that it is too early to determine the Republican response to the passage of a measure legalizing abortion. Despite the challenges of repealing Amendment 3, which protects abortion access up until fetal viability, Kehoe and Senate Republican leaders anticipate that abortion will remain a topic in Missouri politics.

Kehoe attributed the success of Amendment 3 to financial support from proponents but acknowledged the discomfort some Missourians may feel about the state’s restrictive abortion ban. He mentioned the possibility of considering exceptions such as the health of the mother, rape, and incest in future legislation.

However, lawmakers cannot simply overturn Amendment 3 as it is a constitutional amendment. Incoming Senate leaders expressed uncertainty about their next steps but signaled a continued focus on the abortion issue.

Apart from abortion, Kehoe emphasized his priorities of crime prevention and economic development, including discussions on keeping Kansas City sports teams within Missouri. New leadership in both the House and Senate will also bring fresh perspectives to Missouri politics.

Overall, Kehoe’s victory marks a significant milestone in his political journey, highlighting his commitment to addressing key issues facing the state. The upcoming legislative session is expected to be filled with discussions on various policy matters, from abortion rights to economic development initiatives.
