Missouri Basketball to Hold Fight for Literacy Event

Press Release: University of Missouri Men’s Basketball Hosts Book Drive for Literacy

The University of Missouri men’s basketball team is championing the cause of literacy by organizing a book drive during their home game against Lindenwood on November 27. Fans attending this matchup are encouraged to donate gently-used books, which can be dropped off at the main entrance of Mizzou Arena. These books will be donated to Heart of Missouri United Way, benefitting children in the local community.

In a show of support, the Tigers will also extend invitations to 1,300 local children and their families, making the game a family-friendly event. The coaching and support staff will don special pins to further raise awareness for the literacy cause as they face off against the Lions at 5:30 p.m.

This initiative is part of the ongoing Fight for Literacy campaign, which has seen teams across the nation participate since 2013. The campaign, presented by International Paper, encourages teams to host dedicated literacy games, with coaching staff and athletes wearing #Green4Literacy to promote awareness and fundraising efforts for local literacy programs. Over the years, the initiative has successfully raised over $1 million for literacy organizations across the country, underscoring the importance of reading for children’s success in life.

Heart of Missouri United Way plays a vital role in this effort by investing in programs that support health, education, and financial stability in Boone, Cooper, and Howard Counties. The collaboration between Mizzou basketball and local organizations highlights the university’s commitment to community engagement and the well-being of its youth. The event promises to be a significant step forward in helping to foster literacy among children in the region.
