Boeing Reduces Workforce by Nearly 700 Employees in Missouri

Boeing to Lay Off 692 Employees in Missouri Starting January 17

St. Louis — In a significant workforce reduction, Boeing announced Wednesday that it will lay off 692 employees at its facilities across Missouri, effective January 17. The layoffs are part of broader corporate restructuring amidst challenges, including delays in the delivery of its 777X commercial aircraft.

The affected locations include Berkeley (363 positions), Hazelwood (239), St. Charles (68), and others across Kansas City, Kingsville, Maryland Heights, and O’Fallon. This news follows a recent announcement that Boeing would eliminate 17,000 positions company-wide, impacting approximately 100 jobs in the St. Louis area.

With about 1,600 workers employed within the St. Louis region, the layoffs have generated concern among employees. “It’s crucial for the remaining employees to support those leaving during these challenging times,” remarked an anonymous Boeing employee, emphasizing the importance of treating colleagues with empathy.

Career coaches suggest that sudden unemployment can spur individuals to pursue new career paths. Lauren Herring from Impact Group advised, “This situation could become a golden opportunity for those affected to shift their career direction.”

Amid these layoffs, community leaders expressed hope for Boeing’s strong recovery. Berkeley City Manager Nathan Mai-Lombardo stated, “We value Boeing’s contributions and believe they will emerge from this challenge stronger than ever.”

Boeing, a key player in the region’s economy, produces military aircraft and weapons systems, and its workforce reductions underline the ongoing volatility in the aerospace sector. Affected workers will continue receiving pay and health benefits through mid-January, but the uncertainty remains for many as they face potential career upheaval.
