Caleb Rowden Transitions from Missouri Senate Leader to Lobbyist
JEFFERSON CITY – In a notable shift within Missouri’s political landscape, outgoing Senate President Caleb Rowden, a Republican from Columbia, has announced his decision to join the lobbying firm Strategic Capitol Consulting, effective January. After serving eight years in the state’s upper chamber, Rowden, who opted not to pursue another political office due to term limits, intends to leverage his legislative experience in his new role.
Rowden’s hiring by renowned lobbyist Steve Tilley underscores the growing trend of former lawmakers entering the lobbying field, particularly following a recent court ruling that eliminated the two-year "cooling-off" period previously mandated for lawmakers transitioning to lobbying roles. This decision permits former legislators to swiftly re-enter the political arena for potentially lucrative lobbying opportunities, highlighting concerns about the revolving door between public office and special interest advocacy.
"We’re excited to add Rowden’s insight to our firm,” Tilley stated. “His profound knowledge of Missouri politics will be instrumental in navigating today’s complex policy landscape."
In his role as Director of Strategic Advocacy, Rowden will combine his extensive legislative background with experience in media and marketing. His move comes amidst ongoing discussions about lobbying practices in Missouri, particularly as Strategic Capitol Consulting has been involved with the controversial rise of unregulated slot machines in the state.
Rowden’s entrance into lobbying reflects a broader trend, with many former legislators engaging in such roles. As he prepares to leave his Capitol office for the final time, Rowden expressed enthusiasm for continuing his commitment to sound public policy through his new position.
