Rainbow House Shelter’s Sudden Closure Sparks Community Outcry and Investigation
Columbia, MO—The recent closure of the Rainbow House Children’s Emergency Shelter, the sole facility of its kind in mid-Missouri, has sent shockwaves through the community as it seeks answers behind the decision. Allegations of fund mismanagement have emerged, primarily focusing on the organization’s former executive director, Melissa Faurot, who was terminated in August. Faurot, however, disputes these claims, insisting she is not the culpable party.
Founded in 1986 by Kathy Hughes, Rainbow House offered refuge for vulnerable children for nearly four decades. However, the abrupt shutdown in September 2023 has left many questioning its sudden fall from grace, particularly after raising $1.2 million for a planned expansion that included adding a new wing to double its capacity.
In recent months, the organization transitioned from ambitious renovation plans to being the subject of a state investigation instigated by the Missouri Department of Social Services over alleged internal fund misallocation. The board of directors has attributed the financial turmoil to decisions made outside their approved guidelines, though specifics remain murky.
Compounding the confusion, ownership of the shelter’s property was transferred to Little Dixie Construction under questionable circumstances. The shelter’s closure has led to uncertainty regarding future placements for children in need, as another organization, Missouri Network Against Child Abuse, prepares to establish a new child advocacy center.
While plans for a new emergency shelter are reportedly in development, community advocates express deep concern over the loss of such a critical resource. Kathy Hughes emphasized the urgent need for continued support, stating that issues of child abuse and neglect persist.
As the investigation unfolds, both the community and former leaders are left seeking clarity regarding the fate of children who previously sought shelter under Rainbow House’s care.
