Tragic Crash Claims Lives of Two Missouri Teens Heading to Concert
WATSON, Mo. – Two families are grieving after a tragic car crash on Sunday morning claimed the lives of 18-year-olds Lucy Yeates and Kole Cunningham, while Lucy’s twin sister, Aubrey, suffered severe injuries. The teens were en route to a Billie Eilish concert in Omaha, Nebraska, when their vehicle was struck head-on by a man fleeing from police.
The horrific incident occurred near the Iowa-Missouri border, following a police pursuit involving a 29-year-old Nebraska man. Authorities indicated that the man had allegedly kidnapped a woman and her 1-year-old child. After dropping the woman at a hospital, he continued to evade law enforcement, driving southbound in the northbound lanes of Interstate 29, ultimately crashing into the vehicle carrying the three young adults.
In their statement, the Yeates family expressed their devastation: "This incredibly senseless and tragic event has left our families with a hole that will never be filled.” They thanked the community for their support and prayers as they focus on helping Aubrey recover from multiple traumatic injuries; she was airlifted to a Nebraska hospital and is in the process of healing.
Lucy, a promising college student interested in business and leadership, and the dynamic Aubrey, were both recent graduates of Kearney High School. Meanwhile, Kole, who also graduated with them, was remembered as a cherished friend. The community has rallied around the families, with a GoFundMe set up to aid in Aubrey’s recovery.
Tragically, the suspect in the crash died at the scene, and the 1-year-old child was hospitalized but is expected to recover. The incident serves as a grim reminder of the far-reaching impacts of reckless behavior and the consequences of police pursuits.
