Sen. Eric Schmitt, R-Mo., has withdrawn his name from consideration for attorney general in President-elect Trump’s administration. Schmitt, who was elected to the U.S. Senate in 2022, stated that he wants to focus on representing the interests of Missouri voters. He expressed his dedication to fighting for President Trump’s agenda in the Senate, emphasizing the need for “America First fighters.” Trump has made some staffing announcements, including appointing Susie Wiles as White House chief of staff and Rep. Elise Stefanik as the U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations.
Additionally, Tom Homan, the former acting director of ICE, has been selected as Trump’s border czar. Stefanik, who was re-elected to her sixth term in the House last week, is known for advocating for GOP positions on various issues, including Israel. She has spoken out against rising antisemitism and weak U.S. leadership in the past four years. Stefanik has pledged to advance President Trump’s “America First” agenda at the United Nations and promote peace through strength on the global stage.
In a statement, she emphasized the importance of restoring America’s national security and asserting strong leadership worldwide. The decision by Schmitt to decline the attorney general position reflects a larger trend within the Trump transition team to appoint individuals who are aligned with the President’s policies and prioritize America’s interests.
