Italian Camorra mafia member captured in Colombia for drug trafficking

Italian police have arrested fugitive Camorra mafia member Luigi Belvedere in Colombia, where he had been on the run since December 2020. Belvedere was due to serve almost 19 years in prison for drug trafficking and was considered a dangerous fugitive by the Italian interior ministry. He was apprehended in Medellin, and police were able to track his location through intercepted messages with the help of EUROPOL.

Belvedere has been convicted in absentia for importing cocaine and acting as an intermediary between the Casalesi clan of the Camorra and Colombian drug cartels. The Camorra is known for its family-based clan structure and is involved in various illegal activities including drug trafficking, counterfeiting, and money laundering. In a photo distributed by police, Belvedere is seen posing by the grave of infamous Colombian drug lord Pablo Escobar.

The arrest of Belvedere highlights the international reach of Italian mafia groups such as the Camorra. With the assistance of EUROPOL and information gathered from intercepted messages, authorities were able to locate and apprehend the wanted fugitive in Colombia. Belvedere will now face extradition to Italy to serve his prison sentence for his involvement in drug trafficking activities.
