Democratic Sen. Tammy Baldwin and Republican Eric Hovde engaged in a heated debate over abortion rights and economic issues during their only faceoff in the closely contested Wisconsin Senate race. Baldwin accused Hovde of interfering in her personal life and pushing false claims about her support for abortion up to the point of delivery. Hovde, on the other hand, emphasized his pro-life stance with exceptions for rape, incest, and the health of the mother. The debate also touched on immigration, foreign policy, and economic concerns such as child care costs and Social Security.
The two candidates clashed over Baldwin’s accusation of Hovde’s desire to cut federal spending, prompting Hovde to accuse Baldwin of lying. They also sparred over their Wisconsin credentials, with Baldwin highlighting Hovde’s recent residence in California and Hovde questioning her connection to the state. Hovde emphasized his Wisconsin upbringing and education at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, while Baldwin pointed to her graduation from the University of Wisconsin Law School.
The race between Baldwin, seeking her third Senate term, and Hovde, a businessman and bank owner, has tightened in recent weeks. Surveys have shown a closer race, leading the Cook Political Report to change their rating to a “toss-up.” Both candidates have received support from their respective parties and outside groups, with Hovde contributing millions of dollars to his campaign. With early voting about to begin, the race remains a top priority due to Wisconsin’s status as a closely divided battleground state.
