Tech billionaire Elon Musk expressed contradictory views on voting methods during a town hall event in Oaks, Pennsylvania. Musk stated that all voting should be done in person, on paper, and with a form of identification to prevent potential fraud. However, this contradicts his own history of voting by mail and the efforts of his pro-Trump super PAC, America PAC, to promote mail-in and absentee ballots for the upcoming election. Musk has donated nearly $75 million to the super PAC.
During the event, Musk also promoted a debunked conspiracy theory about Dominion Voting Systems rigging elections. He suggested that people who believe they have evidence of voter fraud should post it on his social media app, X, for evaluation. Musk also made false claims about immigrants being brought into swing states by Democrats to cast ballots and made a joke about the pipe bombs left near the U.S. Capitol before the Jan. 6 attack.
Despite his opposition to mail-in and absentee voting, Musk has not reconciled this stance with his own voting practices. Voting by mail and absentee ballot is common in some jurisdictions, and there is no evidence of widespread voter fraud in the United States. Musk’s remarks at the town hall event sparked applause from the audience, which varied in topics from business advice to conspiracy theories.
