Australia anticipates King Charles’ first major overseas tour since cancer diagnosis

King Charles, the only British monarch to have lived in Australia, is set to visit the country for the first time since being diagnosed with cancer. His visit has reignited debate over whether Australia should remain a constitutional monarchy, with polling showing mixed opinions on becoming a republic. Despite concerns over his health, the king has expressed that the decision is up to Australians.

King Charles lived in Australia in 1966 and will visit Sydney and Canberra during his trip, which also includes a stop at the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Samoa. The visit is shorter than typical royal tours due to his ongoing cancer treatment. Despite this, King Charles has made the effort to meet with notable individuals, such as cancer researcher Richard Scolyer, who was named Australian of the Year for his work.

As preparations for the visit continue, pro-republic campaigners are highlighting their desire for Australia to become a republic. Thomas Keneally, founder of the Australian Republic Movement, has noted the shift in Australian society from being largely Anglo-Celtic to a diverse immigrant nation. Despite this, there is still a lingering attachment to the monarchy, although Keneally believes the momentum is slowly moving towards a republic. The disappearance of the monarch from public life is seen as a sign of this shift.
