Former President Donald Trump’s campaign has requested additional security measures due to increased threats against his life. The campaign asked for military assets, including armored cars, protection while flying, and temporary airspace restrictions. President Joe Biden directed the Secret Service to provide high-level protection for Trump, who has faced two alleged assassination attempts. The campaign requested special forces service members be assigned to protect Trump, but this was denied, with the Secret Service requesting special operations forces to prevent potential drone attacks. Trump’s campaign has used additional tactics to be less predictable in movements. Trump ally Rep. Mike Waltz requested the use of planes to detect and deter threats. The campaign’s requests for increased security have not been acted upon. The Secret Service countered claims of inaction, stating that Trump is receiving the highest levels of protection, including explosive ordnance disposal and advanced technology systems. The Department of Defense provides support for candidates, including explosive experts and technicians. Providing more assets could violate federal law restricting the use of the military for domestic purposes. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin approved increased support for candidates, overseen by U.S. Northern Command, to protect against various threats.
