The Justice Department is suing Virginia over its voter roll purging practices, which violate federal voting laws. Governor Glenn Youngkin’s executive order required daily updates to the voting list, leading to the cancellation of some U.S. citizen voter registrations. Youngkin claims the lawsuit is politically motivated and an attack on election legitimacy. Former President Donald Trump supported Youngkin and criticized the DOJ and VP Kamala Harris for undermining democracy. The Department of Elections and elections commissioner declined to comment, and this is the second DOJ lawsuit in a month over violations of the National Voter Registration Act. Virginia’s Democratic voting history and the upcoming Senate race between Tim Kaine and Hung Cao are factors. The Virginia Coalition for Immigrant Rights also filed a lawsuit against Youngkin, alleging discriminatory practices. The executive director praised the DOJ lawsuit for challenging Virginia’s unlawful citizenship purge program, which disenfranchised eligible voters. The DOJ producer for NBC News, Michael Kosnar, and breaking news reporter Raquel Coronell Uribe reported on the story, with contributions from Gary Grumbach and Jillian Frankel.
