Millions at Risk Due to Tornadoes, Flooding, and Power Outages

Hurricane Milton wreaked havoc across Florida, causing more than 10 deaths, cutting power for over 3.3 million customers, and putting 11 million people at risk of flooding. The storm made landfall as a Category 3 in Siesta Key, resulting in tornadoes, intense winds, and heavy rainfall in various parts of the state. Homes were submerged, roads were destroyed, and debris was scattered throughout the affected areas.

Despite the destruction, Governor Ron DeSantis stated that the storm surge was not as severe as initially predicted. More than 80,000 people sought shelter during the storm, with search and rescue teams working to save families and pets. President Joe Biden deployed federal personnel, including over 1,000 members of the Coast Guard, to assist in recovery efforts.

Flights were canceled and delayed, and thousands were left without power due to the storm. Milton was downgraded to a Category 1 hurricane as it moved away from the U.S. coast, with the National Weather Service predicting a rapid weakening. The storm made landfall just 13 days after Hurricane Helene, setting a record for the shortest time between two major hurricanes in Florida.

Helene, which occurred prior to Milton, caused at least 243 deaths in the region, including 25 in Florida, and also resulted in fatalities in other states. Both hurricanes have brought significant devastation to the Southeast, prompting widespread rescue and recovery efforts.
