Atlanta rapper Rich Homie Quan tragically passed away last month in Georgia due to an accidental drug overdose, the Fulton County Medical Examiner announced. The cause of death was determined to be the combined effects of fentanyl, alprazolam, codeine, and promethazine. The rapper, whose real name is Dequantes Devontay Lamar, rose to fame with hits like “Type of Way” and “Flex (Ooh, Ooh, Ooh).” He spoke openly about his struggles with drug use on the hip-hop podcast “My Expert Opinion,” revealing that he began using drugs heavily after the success of his 2013 song. His drug use escalated to the point where he felt he couldn’t perform or create music without being under the influence. In 2014, Rich Homie Quan was named to XXL’s Freshman Class alongside other notable artists like Chance the Rapper and Ty Dolla $ign. Throughout his career, he received nominations for BET and BET Hip Hop Awards, including best new artist and people’s champ award. Rich Homie Quan’s untimely death serves as a reminder of the destructive impact of drug abuse in the music industry and beyond.
