The UNGA Resolution on Palestine did not result in a victory, according to opinions

The United Nations General Assembly recently adopted a resolution calling for Israel to end its illegal occupation of Palestinian territory within a year, with 124 in favor and 12 against, and 43 abstentions. Despite being seen as a victory for Palestinian advocacy, the significant number of countries not supporting the resolution, including the US, UK, and Germany, highlights a level of hypocrisy and lack of moral courage in global governance.

The resolution, which reiterated the International Court of Justice’s ruling that Israel’s occupation is illegal and its settlements on Palestinian land must be dismantled, faced opposition from countries providing military support to Israel. This inconsistency in condemning violations by Israel while taking a harsh stance on other occupations raises questions about the integrity of the global legal framework.

The failure of these countries to uphold international law and prioritize human rights over strategic interests not only enables Israel to continue flouting the law without consequences but also sets a dangerous precedent for other powerful nations to act unilaterally without regard for international norms.

To restore faith in international law and prevent a descent into a world governed by the law of the jungle, there is a need for a unified front from the international community to hold each other accountable for their actions and speak out against violations consistently and impartially. Only through decisive action can the principles of international law be upheld and the world saved from a dark, lawless future.
