Khizr Khan, father of fallen soldier, supports Kamala Harris in presidential bid

Khizr Khan, the father of a Muslim Army captain who criticized Donald Trump at the 2016 Democratic National Convention, announced his endorsement of Vice President Kamala Harris for president in an exclusive interview with NBC News. Khan expressed concerns about Trump becoming a dictator and the threat he poses to American democracy. He praised Harris for her ability to unite the country and support equal opportunity for all Americans.
Khan, whose son was killed while serving in Iraq, believes Trump is divisive and disrespectful towards veterans and their families. He also criticized Trump for using the grief of Gold Star families for political gain. Khan urged these families to reconsider their support for Trump, who he believes exploits every opportunity for his own benefit.
Additionally, Khan commented on the recent controversy surrounding Trump’s visit to Arlington National Cemetery with some Gold Star families, where photos were taken for his campaign. Harris, too, condemned Trump for disrespecting sacred ground for a political stunt. However, Trump defended his actions, stating that he was asked by a family to take a photo at their loved one’s grave.
As the Harris campaign faces Republican attacks regarding the U.S. military withdrawal from Afghanistan, Khan stands by the administration’s decisions and warns against second-guessing military leadership for political gain. He believes that exploiting such issues only benefits the country’s adversaries and harms national security. Khan’s endorsement of Harris comes as the campaign prepares for further attacks from Republicans and criticism from Gold Star families.
