Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro led a rally in Sao Paulo to protest against the ban of social media platform X, timed to coincide with Independence Day. Dressed in the colors of the Brazilian flag, Bolsonaro criticized Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes for the ban, calling him a dictator who harms Brazil. De Moraes had ordered the suspension of X’s activities in Brazil after the platform refused to comply with Brazilian law. Bolsonaro’s protest attracted thousands, with members of the far right accusing the ban of infringing on free speech. Bolsonaro himself has had clashes with De Moraes in the lead-up to the 2022 elections, spreading misinformation about electoral fraud. After losing the vote, Bolsonaro and his supporters challenged the results, leading to protests and a violent assault on government buildings. De Moraes led the court in banning Bolsonaro from office until 2030 for spreading false information. At the protest, Bolsonaro continued to make false claims about the election, alleging bias and calling the January 8 riot a set-up. Bolsonaro’s call for protest highlights ongoing tensions between him and De Moraes, as well as broader divisions within Brazilian society.
