Man taken into custody for fatal shooting of college gymnast in Wisconsin

A 23-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the shooting death of University of Wisconsin-Whitewater gymnast Kara Welsh. The suspect, who knew the victim, shot Welsh following an altercation at a campus-area apartment. Welsh, a business management major and national title-winning gymnast, was pronounced dead on the scene. The suspect has been booked on suspicion of first-degree intentional homicide, endangering safety while armed, and disorderly conduct while armed.

University Chancellor Corey King announced Welsh’s death and expressed condolences to the university community. Welsh was known for her talent in gymnastics, particularly on the vault, and was described as a dedicated teammate and a light in dark days. The university plans to hold memorial services for Welsh, and counseling will be available for those who need it.

The Whitewater Police Department is continuing its investigation into the incident, and flags on campus will fly at half-staff in Welsh’s honor. USA Gymnastics also offered condolences to Welsh’s family, friends, and teammates. The community is shocked and saddened by the loss of Welsh, a beloved member of the university and gymnastics team.
