Uruguayan footballer Juan Izquierdo tragically passed away after collapsing on the pitch due to an irregular heartbeat during a Copa Libertadores match against Sao Paulo. The Club Nacional de Football announced his death with deep sadness, expressing condolences to his family and friends. South American football president Alejandro Dominguez also extended his sympathies, calling it a mournful day for football.
Izquierdo had been receiving medical treatment since his collapse on August 22nd, with doctors at Hospital Albert Einstein stating he suffered cardiorespiratory arrest associated with his cardiac arrhythmia. Despite efforts to save him, Izquierdo’s condition continued to deteriorate, leading to his passing.
Both Uruguayan first and second division leagues were postponed out of concern for Izquierdo’s health. Sao Paulo players paid tribute to him in their next match, wearing shirts in support of the young footballer.
Izquierdo began his professional career in 2018 and had stints with various clubs before returning to Nacional this year. He was a key player for Liverpool Club, helping them secure a Uruguayan league title in 2023.
