Police bodycam footage captures Ohio officer kicking man in chest while he is on the ground with hands up

A video posted on social media showed Canton, Ohio, police officer Brandon Momirov kicking 21-year-old Jaemiier McElroy in the chest as he knelt with his hands raised. The incident occurred after police responded to reports of an argument, during which multiple individuals fled the scene. McElroy was taken to the hospital and remains in pain. Canton police stated that Momirov’s actions are under review, but he is still employed.

This incident is one of several cases of alleged police violence involving Canton officers, according to attorney Bobby DiCello. Three individuals have died and three, including McElroy, have been seriously injured in cases since January 1, 2022. These incidents include the shooting death of James Williams, the fatal shooting of Zachary Fornash, the death of Frank Tyson in police custody, and the deployment of a K-9 dog on Kieven Conver during a traffic stop.

DiCello criticized Canton police for their handling of these incidents, stating that officers are treating civilians like enemy combatants. He described the frequency of violent police interactions as alarming, noting that if the incidents were in another context, it would be considered a crime spree. Canton police have not responded to requests for comment on these incidents.

The city of Canton, with a population of about 70,000, has faced heightened scrutiny over the conduct of its police officers and their interactions with the community. Attorney DiCello is representing several individuals involved in these cases and seeking justice for those affected by police violence in the city.
