A bald eagle in Missouri is slowly recovering after being shot, a common occurrence for America’s national bird. The male eagle, known as No. 24-390, was found injured with a split upper beak, a wounded wing, and lead poisoning. The World Bird Sanctuary has been treating him with multiple surgeries, with the goal of eventually releasing him back into the wild.
Unfortunately, this is not an isolated incident, as the sanctuary has treated six raptors for gunshot wounds this summer alone. Experts have noted a disturbing increase in shooting injuries to these majestic birds, which are considered sacred by Native Americans and have been a symbol of the United States for centuries.
The population of bald eagles has been making a comeback since being listed as endangered in 1978, with Missouri alone now boasting 609 nests. However, the number of shootings has also been on the rise, with many incidents stemming from ignorance and boredom rather than malicious intent.
The Federal Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act prohibits killing or disturbing eagles without a permit, and even possessing their feathers found in the wild can be a crime. Despite these laws, irresponsible individuals continue to shoot eagles, posing a threat to their population.
The World Bird Sanctuary is working to rehabilitate No. 24-390 and raise awareness about the importance of protecting these iconic birds. Through education and enforcement of existing laws, experts hope to reduce the number of shootings and ensure a bright future for America’s national symbol.
