A college student, Andrea Rodriguez Avila, was found shot dead in her dorm room at Rice University in Houston. The suspect in the shooting, who was believed to be her boyfriend, was found dead nearby from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The investigation revealed that the two were dating and were in a troubled relationship. The suspect may have been from Florida, and it is believed that he entered the residence with Avila’s access. There was no forced entry into the room. Rice University assured students and parents that the campus is safe and that counseling is available 24 hours a day for those in need. The university president expressed condolences and emphasized support for the student community. Jones College, where the incident occurred, has a history dating back to 1957 when it was established as a place where women could reside on campus. If facing a crisis or domestic violence, resources like the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, National Domestic Violence hotline, and state-specific hotlines are available for help and support.
