Meet Paetongtarn Shinawatra, Thailand’s youngest prime minister in history

The Thai parliament made history by electing Paetongtarn Shinawatra, the youngest-ever prime minister, following the removal of former Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin. Srettha was dismissed after a petition by 40 senators who objected to his appointment of a lawyer with a controversial past. Critics speculated that the lawyer’s ties to billionaire Thaksin Shinawatra, founder of the Pheu Thai Party, influenced his appointment.

Paetongtarn, 37, is Thaksin’s daughter and easily won the prime minister position with the support of her party and its allies. She is known for her work in her family’s business empire before entering politics three years ago. Paetongtarn is the third person from her family to hold the country’s top job, following her father and aunt.

Her appointment comes amid political turmoil between the pro-royalist military establishment and populist parties like the Pheu Thai Party. The military seized power in a 2014 coup, and despite promises to end political division, continued to influence politics until elections were held in 2019.

Paetongtarn’s policies include lowering public transportation fares, expanding healthcare coverage, and increasing the minimum wage. Her first term will involve dealing with Thailand’s struggling economy, her party’s decreasing popularity, and potential opposition from groups like the Peoples’ Party.

The political landscape in Thailand remains complex, with ongoing tensions between the military, pro-democracy parties, and the royal establishment. Paetongtarn’s leadership will be crucial in navigating these challenges and driving the country forward.
