Russian-American Ksenia Karelina has been sentenced to 12 years in a Russian jail on treason charges for making a donation of just over $50 to a charity supporting Ukraine. The court’s decision was based on her financial support to the organization, which led to her conviction.
As Ukraine’s incursion into Russia’s Kursk region continues, the stakes are escalating for both countries. Ukrainian forces are advancing into Kursk oblast, and Ukrainian operational security has been tight, with soldiers not allowed to post military successes on social media without higher-level permission. Despite the uncertainties surrounding the outcome of the incursion, Ukraine is reportedly becoming more committed to its military campaign.
In response to the incursion, Russia has declared a federal-level emergency in the Belgorod region due to terrorist attacks by Ukrainian armed groups. As a result, a significant number of people have been evacuated from border regions. Meanwhile, Russia’s defence ministry has reported shooting down Ukrainian drones and targeting Ukrainian positions in the Kursk region.
Amidst these developments, Ukraine’s defense minister has spoken with the US counterpart about the battlefield situation and defense needs. Additionally, the Ukrainian airforce has shot down Russia-launched drones and missiles, causing only minor damage. Ukrainian troops have also taken over 100 Russian soldiers prisoner in Kursk, with plans for a future prisoner of war swap.
Overall, tensions remain high as the conflict between Russia and Ukraine intensifies in the Kursk region, with significant military and humanitarian implications for both countries.
