Rep. Cori Bush of Missouri, a member of the progressive “squad,” has lost her primary to St. Louis County Prosecutor Wesley Bell, who is backed by a pro-Israel group. Bell won with the support of the United Democracy Project, tied to the American Israel Public Affairs Committee. The primary highlighted divisions within the party on Israel, with Bush being a vocal critic of the Israeli government’s response to Hamas’ attacks. Bell emphasized the need to work across party lines to get things done. The race attracted significant funding and attention from voters in multiple states.
In Michigan, Democratic Rep. Elissa Slotkin and GOP former Rep. Mike Rogers won their primaries for the Senate race, which is expected to be competitive given Michigan’s significance in national politics. Davis and Junge won their primaries in the competitive 8th District, setting up an open seat contest to replace retiring Democratic Rep. Dan Kildee.
In Kansas, Republican physician Prasnath Reddy will challenge Democratic Rep. Sharice Davids in the 3rd District, while in Washington, Democratic Rep. Marie Gluesenkamp Perez will face Republican Joe Kent in a rematch. Gluesenkamp Perez is one of five Democrats representing districts won by Trump in 2020. Trump endorsed multiple candidates in Tuesday’s primaries, with some winning their races, including state Sen. Bob Onder in Missouri’s 3rd District. Missouri Lt. Gov. Mike Kehoe won the GOP primary for governor and will face Democratic state Rep. Crystal Quade in November. The Republicans are expected to retain control of the Governor’s Mansion.
