Brussels has issued a warning to both Belgrade and Pristina, stating that their refusal to compromise could potentially harm Serbia and Kosovo’s chances of joining the European Union. The European Commission specifically addressed Kosovo’s recent closure of several Post of Serbia branches, calling it a “unilateral and uncoordinated step” that could have “very negative consequences” for the local population.
The EU emphasized that Kosovo must reconsider its actions and address the issue within the framework of the EU-facilitated Dialogue. Tensions between Serbia and Kosovo have been escalating, with disputes over local elections and the use of currency further straining relations between the two entities.
The EU had previously implemented temporary measures against Kosovo following violent unrest, including a suspension of high-level contacts and financial cooperation. Belgrade criticized the closures of the Post of Serbia branches as an “open display of force” by Pristina.
The Commission spokesperson warned that such unilateral actions by Pristina could lead to further escalation and jeopardize the chances of both Serbia and Kosovo joining the EU. It is essential for both parties to compromise and work towards a peaceful resolution to avoid damaging their prospects of EU membership.
