KCUR: Meet the Democratic candidates vying for Missouri governor

As the 2024 gubernatorial race in Missouri begins to heat up, several Democratic candidates have thrown their hats into the ring in hopes of unseating Republican Governor Mike Parson. Among the contenders are State Auditor Nicole Galloway, who lost to Parson in the 2020 election; former State Senator Scott Sifton; and St. Louis Treasurer Tishaura Jones.

Galloway, the only Democrat currently holding statewide office in Missouri, is seen as a top contender in the race. She has focused her campaign on issues such as healthcare, education, and government transparency. Sifton, who served in the state Senate for eight years and has a background in law, is also positioning himself as a strong candidate with a focus on expanding healthcare access and strengthening workers’ rights.

Jones, the first African American woman to hold the position of St. Louis Treasurer, is running on a platform that emphasizes criminal justice reform, economic equity, and fighting corruption. She has garnered support from progressive and grassroots organizations in the state.

While the Democratic primary race is still in its early stages, these candidates are already beginning to differentiate themselves on key issues and strategies for defeating Parson. Parson, who has been governor since 2018, is expected to run for reelection and has already begun fundraising for his campaign.

As the race continues to unfold, Missouri Democrats are hopeful that one of these candidates will be able to build a strong campaign and unseat Parson in the general election. With a focus on healthcare, education, economic equity, and government transparency, the Democratic candidates are working to connect with voters and build momentum ahead of the 2024 election.
