Merseyside Police are urging an end to speculation surrounding the 17-year-old suspect arrested in connection with Monday’s fatal attack on a children’s dance class in Southport, England. The attack left three girls dead and eight children injured, with some in critical condition.
Following a vigil for the victims, a large crowd of far-right, anti-Muslim protesters clashed with police in Southport, resulting in 22 officers being injured, eight seriously. The violent unrest was linked to the English Defence League, a group known for staging violent demonstrations against Islam. Off-duty officers and reinforcements from other forces were called in to restore calm.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer promised that the rioters would face the “full force of the law” for their actions. He condemned those who hijacked the vigil for the victims with violence and thuggery.
Police have arrested a teenager for murder and attempted murder in connection with the stabbings. Authorities have warned against speculation regarding the suspect’s background, stating that he was born in the UK. Many of those involved in the violence were from outside the area, according to police and local politicians.
The Liverpool Region Mosque Network expressed concern over the protesters gathering outside the Southport Mosque, causing fear and anxiety within the community. The families of the three girls killed in the attack have identified them as Bebe King, Elsie Dot Stancombe, and Alice Dasilva Aguiar, whose parents are Portuguese. Singer Taylor Swift also expressed shock over the tragedy.
