The Missouri Coroner’s and Medical Examiner’s Association has expressed their support for the proposed training rule set by the Missouri Coroners Standards and Training Commission. Association President Dan Heavin stated that while the timing presents a challenge, they have a plan in place to ensure all coroners and deputy coroners in Missouri meet the new standards by the end of 2024. This is in line with the statutory requirements of RsMO 193.145, which mandates that coroners must be trained to the new standards before assuming office in January 2025.
The MCMEA is dedicated to making sure that Missouri coroners are trained to the highest standards as soon as possible. By meeting the new standards, coroners will be able to certify deaths and sign death certificates, thus enabling them to be included on the approved list of qualified individuals. While it remains uncertain if 19 CSR 20-80.010 will be fully in effect before the end of 2024, the MCMEA is preparing for its implementation.
The Association’s commitment to ensuring that coroners in Missouri are properly trained underscores their dedication to maintaining the highest standards in the field. The support for the proposed training rule is a significant step towards ensuring that coroners are equipped to handle their responsibilities effectively and uphold the necessary standards in the state.
