Missouri students and families are gearing up for the annual Back-to-School Sales Tax Holiday this weekend, allowing them to purchase school supplies without paying local and state sales tax. The holiday begins at 12:01 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 2, and runs through midnight on Sunday, Aug. 4.
During this time, certain items such as clothing, school supplies, computers, and other qualifying items are exempt from local and state sales tax. Since 2023, local sales tax will also be waived in all cities, counties, and special tax districts.
Eligible purchases include clothing under $100, school supplies under $50, calculators, computer software, and personal computers under $1,500. Not included are items like watches, jewelry, handbags, and ties.
Anyone can participate in the holiday by making qualified purchases, regardless of their residency or student status. The tax-free weekend provides a chance for families to save money as they prepare for the upcoming school year, which in Springfield begins on Monday, Aug. 19.
Overall, the Back-to-School Sales Tax Holiday is a great opportunity for students and families in Missouri to stock up on necessary supplies and save some money in the process.
