Warning from Missouri Department of Conservation: Do not harm bryozoans found at Lake of the Ozarks

Officials from the Missouri Department of Conservation have confirmed the presence of bryozoans, jellyfish-like creatures, in Lake of the Ozarks. These creatures are actually beneficial as they help filter impurities in the water, leaving it cleaner. Executive Director of Lake of the Ozarks Watershed Alliance, Donna Swall, urges boaters and floaters not to harm these creatures if they see them on their boats or docks.

Francis Skalicky, also from the Missouri Department of Conservation, explains that bryozoans feed by filtering water and are an indicator of good water quality. If bryozoans are present, it means the water is of better quality. These creatures can form large colonies by clumping together, providing an outer protective structure.

It is advised not to remove bryozoans unless necessary, and if removal is required, to do so carefully to avoid harming the invertebrates. Any corrections or typos can be reported to digitalnews@ky3.com.

Overall, bryozoans play a positive role in maintaining the water quality of Lake of the Ozarks and should be left undisturbed to continue their beneficial filtering activities.
