IDF launches strikes in Lebanon following attack on Golan Heights

Israel’s military retaliated against Hezbollah targets in Lebanon following a deadly rocket strike from Lebanon that killed 12 people in the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu promised to respond to what military officials described as the deadliest attack on Israel since Hamas’s Oct. 7 assault.

Netanyahu is expected to meet with his security cabinet upon his return from the United States. Israel’s military targeted Hezbollah weapons caches and infrastructure in Lebanon, including in several areas.

The rocket attack on a soccer field in the Golan Heights resulted in the deaths of mostly teenagers and children, with dozens more injured. Israel blamed Hezbollah for the incident, while the militant group denied the accusations. Fighting along the Lebanon-Israel border has been escalating in recent months.

In a separate incident, at least 30 Palestinians were killed in a strike on a school sheltering displaced people in central Gaza. The Israel Defense Forces targeted a Hamas command and control center in the school compound. The Gaza Health Ministry reported over 39,000 people killed and nearly 91,000 injured in Gaza since the conflict began, with estimates of around 1,200 deaths from Hamas’s Oct. 7 attack. Israel reported over 300 soldiers killed since launching its military operation in Gaza. The situation has raised fears of a wider escalation in hostilities.
