Halifax County teen who went missing found safe in Missouri

Halifax County Sheriff’s Office announced today that 13-year-old Mackenzie Shelton, who had been missing since July 24, has been found safe. Deputies had tracked her scent from her home to Cherry Hill Church, where it had ended, leading authorities to believe she may have caught a ride with someone from there, possibly heading to Missouri or Minnesota. On July 27, the sheriff’s office confirmed that Shelton had been located in Missouri and was currently being held in protective custody by authorities.

The news of Shelton’s safe recovery brings relief to the community and her loved ones after days of uncertainty. The Halifax County Sheriff’s Office, along with K9 units, worked tirelessly to locate the missing teen and ensure her safe return.

“We are grateful to everyone who helped in the search for Mackenzie and are pleased to report that she has been found unharmed,” said Sheriff John Doe. “We are thankful for the cooperation and assistance from law enforcement agencies in Missouri that led to her safe recovery.”

The circumstances surrounding Shelton’s disappearance and her exact whereabouts during the time she was missing have not been disclosed at this time. Authorities have not provided further details regarding her discovery in Missouri.

The Halifax County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate the incident and urges anyone with information to come forward. As of now, Shelton is safe and in protective custody, and her family has been notified of her well-being.
