Two political action committees are backing candidates Andrew Bailey and Will Scharf in the Missouri Republican primary for attorney general, raising a total of $4.6 million in large donations this month. The money is fueling an intense advertising campaign including TV ads, mailers, and text messages as both candidates vie for the GOP nomination. The election is set for August 6, with early voting already underway.
Bailey, who was appointed attorney general by Governor Mike Parson in 2022, is supported by the Liberty and Justice PAC, which raised $1.9 million this month mainly from Missouri’s top political donors, the Sinquefields. The PAC has received a total of $3.5 million in large donations this year.
Scharf, a former assistant U.S. attorney, is backed by two PACs – Defend Missouri and Club for Growth Action. Defend Missouri has received support mainly from Club for Growth Action and recently got a $1.1 million donation from the Concord Fund. Club for Growth Action has raised $1.9 million this month, with most of it coming from its federal PAC.
Overall, Club for Growth has raised $7.6 million in large donations this year. Both candidates are aggressively campaigning to secure the Republican nomination in a state that has not elected a Democrat to statewide office since 2018. Voters will have a choice between Bailey and Scharf, with both candidates enjoying substantial financial support as they approach the primary election.
