Ariarne Titmus of Australia defended her 400-metre freestyle title at the Paris Olympics, defeating USA’s Katie Ledecky once again. Titmus, also known as “The Terminator,” led from start to finish, winning comfortably in 3:57.49. Ledecky settled for bronze, while Canadian Summer McIntosh took silver.
Titmus expressed pressure and respect for Ledecky, who has six individual gold medals in her career. Meanwhile, Lukas Maertens of Germany won the men’s 400-metre freestyle gold, his first Olympic gold medal in the event. Australia set an Olympic record in the women’s 4×100-metre freestyle relay, with the USA taking silver.
In the men’s 4×100-metre freestyle relay, the USA team led by Caeleb Dressel won gold, with Australia taking silver and Italy bronze. The US team rallied to win, with Dressel powering them to victory after a strong performance by Chinese swimmer Pan Zhanle. The US has a strong history of dominance in the event, winning 10 out of the 14 times it has been on the Olympic programme.
