Remote village of Daly in Ethiopia devastated by deadly landslides
The remote village of Daly in Ethiopia’s Gofa Zone has been left reeling after deadly landslides caused by torrential rains swept away houses and people. Retired teacher Meaza Tadelu is among those still holding out hope that his missing wife may be found alive. The disaster has claimed the lives of at least 257 people, with fears that the death toll could double.
The region’s challenging mountainous terrain has made it difficult for heavy machinery to reach the affected areas, leaving locals to dig through the mud with bare hands in search of survivors. Many residents, like Tadelu and distraught mother Almaz Tadesae, have lost entire families in the tragedy.
As the community mourns its losses, the lack of proper equipment and professional help has made rescue efforts challenging. Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has expressed sadness over the disaster and deployed the Federal Disaster Prevention Task Force to the area, but locals claim the task force has not arrived.
The devastating landslides highlight the poverty and lack of infrastructure in the region, with residents living in mud huts and facing difficulties accessing timely help. The tragedy serves as a stark reminder of the vulnerability of remote communities in the face of natural disasters.
Despite the grim outlook, Tadelu and his fellow villagers continue to dig through the debris, clinging to hope of finding their loved ones alive. As they navigate through the grief and devastation, the community remains united in their resilience and determination to overcome the tragedy.
