The Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs are throwing their support behind efforts to legalize sports betting in Missouri. The team, along with the St. Louis Cardinals, is pushing for the issue to be added to the November ballot, allowing voters to decide. Chiefs President Mark Donovan stated that they believe legalization is good for the state, fans, and other sports. Missouri is one of only a few states that haven’t legalized sports betting, and the initiative would also authorize a new casino at the Lake of the Ozarks. A coalition of teams, including the Chiefs, Cardinals, Blues, and Royals, submitted a petition for the voter initiative, gathering over 340,000 signatures for sports betting and 320,000 for the casino plan. The secretary of state’s office now has three weeks to process the petitions, with county clerks verifying the signatures. The effort to legalize sports betting in Missouri comes after unsuccessful attempts in the legislature in recent years. With strong support from the Chiefs and other major sports teams, the issue is gaining momentum and could soon be put in the hands of the voters to decide.
