Vice President Kamala Harris had a “frank and constructive” meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House, expressing concerns about the humanitarian situation in Gaza and the need to finalize a cease-fire agreement. Harris emphasized the importance of ending the war in Gaza, bringing hostages home, providing relief to the Palestinian people, and working towards a two-state solution. The meeting took place amid Harris’s bid for president in 2024 and comes after President Joe Biden’s decision not to seek re-election. The leaders discussed security threats, such as those from Iran and terrorist groups like Hamas and Hezbollah, as well as efforts to reach a cease-fire agreement and address the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. Families of American hostages held by Hamas in Gaza also met with Biden and Netanyahu, receiving assurances of their commitment to bring the hostages home. Netanyahu thanked Biden for his support during the hostage crisis and for his leadership in standing by Israel. The White House noted progress in closing a cease-fire agreement and expressed confidence in Netanyahu’s willingness to finalize the deal. Netanyahu is set to meet with former President Donald Trump after the White House visit.
