Video game performers declare strike due to concerns over artificial intelligence

Video game performers represented by the Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) have voted to go on strike starting Friday due to concerns over artificial intelligence (AI) protections in a proposed new contract with major game developers. Negotiations have been ongoing for over a year and a half, with the union representing actors negotiating with companies such as Activision, Disney, and Electronic Arts. The union is seeking clear language in the contract that guarantees protections for performers in relation to AI technology. The producers are disappointed by the strike and claim to be close to reaching a deal, with offers including wage increases and safety provisions.

This is the second time video game voice actors and performance capture artists will be striking, with the last strike occurring in 2016. The actors are concerned about AI being used to replicate their voices and likeness without consent. SAG-AFTRA previously announced a deal with Replica Studios to establish protections around the licensing of digitally replicated voices. Some actors have expressed frustration over the unchecked use of AI in the industry, fearing that it could lead to the displacement of human performers.

Despite progress made in negotiations on digital replicas, union leaders feel that the current contract leaves performers vulnerable to exploitation and are calling for stronger protections. The strike will exempt San Diego ComicCon attendees but is seen as a necessary last resort to address the concerns of video game performers regarding AI protections in their contracts.
