Former President Barack Obama and Vice President Kamala Harris have been in close contact since she announced her presidential candidacy, with Obama fully supporting her campaign and planning to endorse her soon. Obama has been providing counsel to Harris on setting up her campaign and navigating the high-stakes race. While Obama has yet to publicly endorse Harris, he has privately expressed his support and believes she has had a strong start to her campaign.
Both Obama and Harris want his endorsement to be a significant moment separate from President Joe Biden’s activities, with plans for joint appearances on the campaign trail being discussed. Michelle Obama also supports Harris’ candidacy. Obama is expected to be a fixture on the campaign trail this fall to help unify the Democratic party and move them forward.
The only publicly known phone call between Obama and Harris took place on the day Biden announced the end of his re-election campaign and endorsed Harris. Obama didn’t publicly endorse Harris at that time but supported a process to select a new Democratic nominee. Harris quickly received endorsements from across the country and faced no challengers for the nomination.
Obama and Harris have a history of supporting each other, with Harris being an early supporter of Obama’s 2008 campaign and speaking at his 2012 nominating convention. Obama also campaigned for Harris during her runs for attorney general in California and her Senate campaign in 2016.
