Labour stands by Great British Energy plan despite funding concerns – live updates on UK politics

Energy secretary Ed Miliband has stated that it will take some time for GB Energy, a state-owned energy company, to start making money. Legislation establishing the company needs to pass through the House of Commons, and £8.3bn has been allocated for investments in windfarms and solar projects before returns can be generated. Miliband emphasized the importance of moving towards clean, homegrown British energy to gain control over bills, rather than being at the mercy of global gas prices.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Keir Starmer has accused the previous government of leaving a mess that Labour is now trying to fix. Starmer highlighted the establishment of Great British Energy as one of their key achievements. The government is committed to creating good jobs and reducing energy bills for the benefit of the planet and its people.

In other news, Labour has delayed plans to address strategic lawsuits against public participation (Slapps) brought by oligarchs to intimidate journalists, academics, and campaigners. The government will conduct a review to outlaw abusive Slapps while protecting access to justice for legitimate claims. Conservative peer Tina Stowell urged legislation to ban Slapps, but questions remain about how to effectively implement such bans.

Former shadow chancellor John McDonnell has claimed that Labour will face pressure to abolish the two-child benefit limit after he and six others were suspended for voting on an SNP amendment. The rebellion was described as a genuine point of conscience in response to high levels of child poverty in certain constituencies.
