Wednesday, July 24 Update: Important Information from Mid-Missouri News

Boone County experienced a high turnout on the first day of no-excuse absentee voting ahead of the August 6 primary election. Voters can cast their ballots early at the Boone County Government Center or other locations in Columbia until August 5. For more information on candidates and ballot measures, voters can refer to KOMU 8’s voters guide.

One of the key issues on the primary ballot is the renewal of Columbia’s Capital Improvement Sales Tax, also known as Proposition 1. This sales tax, which has been in place since the early 1990s, has been crucial in funding city infrastructure and public services. If renewed, it is estimated to generate approximately $88 million for the city through 2035, with 75% going to the Public Works Department and 25% to the Police and Fire departments.

In other news, Sunset Drive in Columbia will be closed for a stormwater improvement project starting Wednesday. Ameren Missouri has also announced an additional $200,000 in energy assistance funds for active-duty military, veterans, and their families who are struggling to pay their energy bills. Missouri American Water’s MR340 race, the world’s longest nonstop river race covering 340 miles, is also underway with a clear forecast for the duration of the event.

Overall, there is a lot happening in Boone County as residents prepare to participate in the upcoming primary election and various community projects and events.
