Salt Lake City has been chosen to host the Winter Olympics in 2034, with the city celebrating the return of the games that were last held there in 2002. The announcement was met with excitement and cheers from hundreds of Utahans at Washington Square Park. The CEO of Visit Salt Lake expressed the opportunity as a “once in a generation” experience that will put the city on a global stage. The decision marks the fifth time the Winter Olympics will be held in the United States, with previous hosting in Lake Placid, Squaw Valley, and Salt Lake City in addition to the upcoming event. France has been conditionally awarded the 2030 Winter Olympics pending financial guarantees. The next five sets of Olympic Games are largely set, with Italy hosting the 2026 Winter Games, Los Angeles hosting the 2028 Summer Games, and Brisbane hosting the 2032 Summer Games. The 2030 Winter Games will likely go to the French Alps region, while Salt Lake City will have its second shot at hosting the Winter Olympics in 2034. The decisions for the hosting of future games have been in the works for months, with concerns eased by political developments in France.
