The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has announced that federal disaster assistance is now available for more than 10 Missouri counties that were impacted by severe storms in May. The aid will help supplement recovery efforts in areas that were impacted by tornadoes, straight-line winds, and flooding that occurred between May 19 and May 27.
Individual assistance is available to residents of Barry County, as well as several other Missouri counties including Butler, Carter, Howell, New Madrid, Ripley, Scott, Shannon, Stoddard, and Texas Counties. Grants are available to assist with temporary housing and home repairs, as well as low-cost loans for uninsured property losses for individuals and business owners.
The federal funding is also available to state, local governments, and private non-profit groups to help cover the costs of emergency work and repairing facilities damaged during the storms. In our area, state and local government assistance is available for Barry and McDonald counties, as well as Butler, Carter, Howell, Madison, New Madrid, Oregon, Reynolds, Ripley, Scott, Shannon, Stoddard, and Texas Counties.
President Biden has granted a disaster declaration for Kansas as well, in response to the severe storms in early May. The federal disaster assistance is an important step in helping these communities recover and rebuild following the devastating impact of the storms.
