Missouri’s Availability of Game Officials as Fall Sports Season Approaches

Missouri is seeing a growing trend in high school sports officials as the upcoming season approaches. The state has over 1,000 sports officials, putting it in the top five for employment in the field nationally. The Missouri State High School Activities Association (MSHSAA) had nearly 6,000 officials registered last year, up from the previous year. These officials are independent contractors and can work with schools to officiate games for various sports.

The demand for officials is high, with around 300 schools playing football in the state and 150 games on average per week. Officials like Eric Hawkins, a high school basketball referee and president of the Southwest Missouri Basketball Officials Association, emphasize the importance of training and dedication to the job. Despite facing criticism and pressure from parents and spectators, officials strive to make fair calls and improve their skills.

MSHSAA is seeing a positive trend with younger officials getting certified and interested in officiating games. High schoolers can also become certified officials for middle and junior high-level games. Registration for fall sports officials in Missouri closes on August 2, 2024, and those interested can visit the MSHSAA website or the Southwest Missouri Basketball Officials Association for more information on how to become a sports official in the state. As the season approaches, the commitment and dedication of sports officials in Missouri remain strong despite challenges they may face.
